No Pretend

October 16, 2007

I wonder what would happen if someone raised their kids with no “pretend” anything: no ghosts, no witches, no dragons, no magic, no monsters, no giants, no flying brooms, no talking cars, no fairies, no wands, no santas, no gods, no actors, no pigs that aspire, no fish that hope, no bears that cry, no toys that rebel, no mouse that cook, no cats that sing, no “pretend” anything. Would such kids have any less of an imagination? I doubt it. Would such kids be less able to cope with reality? Would they become cynical? Would they be less prone to superstitious beliefs later in life? I have no idea. But someone should try. I am too weak to even curb the barrage of unreality that flows daily through my kids’ brains…
