Glenn Loury is fun to listen to. He’s sharp and subtle, a master of nuance. Yet in this half-minute he declares himself a perfect “social constructivist” (using Hayek’s definition) or “social creationist” (using more recent terminology).
Now, to be fair, he is saying this in response to a simplified version of the supposed philosophy of the right. Namely, less taxes, smaller government, etc…One could object that the right only pays lip service to these principles, but that’s not the point I want to make. The thing that really surprises me is how a refined thinker such as Loury can affirm that Government, not only should, but can construct, reshape, drive society to the better. No room for unintended consequences, public choice issues, etc…not even a hint.
