Tell me what you want, what you really really want…

November 19, 2008

So why is it that what we want collectively is often completely insane? Examples are everywhere we look: Two people should not be able to sign a marriage contract even if they want to, we should subsidize rich farmers, we should forbid consumers from buying foreign, everybody should have a good salary, we should straighten up other countries with our military, etc….dreams, pipe-dreams, fantasies, emotional impulses, hubris. Why?

Because that’s not what we really want. What we really want individually we’re pretty good at. From birth we’ve learned the hard lessons of keeping dreams in check and balancing them with reality, lest we bruise our noses. The insane ideas that politicians listen to as if it was what we, society, wants are collected through opinion polls and at the voting booth. No bruised nose can be incurred there. You can let yourself go. Explore your more bizarre inner wishes. They’ll be tallied up, recorded and government will try its best to make your wishes come true. How heroic.
