If you say anything of the sort in public, you’re guaranteed to upset the Obama supporters who think Bush is the devil AND Bush’s supporters (are there any?) who think Obama is the devil. So you would think that that is a pretty obnoxious thing to say.
On the other hand, from a purely abstract point-of-view, they are indeed equivalent, they have the same institutional role, they face similar (abstract) incentives, etc…So when public choice theorists look at politics they rely on a purely impersonal model. Such mode of thinking appeals to me. The only thing that bothers me about it is that it completely does away with the concept of personal responsibility and accountability. But then again those are very hard concepts to define as well. So I don’t know.
